Landscape lighting can add a lot of drama and character to your front yard landscaping. However, planning out the right pattern for landscape lighting, choosing the right lights and fixtures, and setting up an arrangement as per plan is not an easy task. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right kind of lights and fixtures along with some information on what all you need to set up an energy-efficient landscape lighting arrangement.
Before you set off to buy the equipment, understand what you want to highlight through landscape lighting. Is it the beautiful fountain that stands in the middle of your garden or is it the wonderful woodwork you have on your walls? Once you have narrowed down what you want to highlight through outdoor lighting designs, the rest is easier to streamline and work with.
How to Choose Lights for Different Elements
Highlighting Plants: Strong lighting is not recommended for plants. Pick out small uplights to highlight your plants. This will result in a soft glow that will highlight the silhouette of the plant and give you an impression of the plant growing.
Stonework: Outdoor lamps and lanterns are the best way to highlight stonework. Especially, if you are using it with a fountain surrounded by stonework. The water will reflect the light and highlight the stonework in an almost fantastical way.
Status: Spotlights are the best choice for lighting up an attraction such as a statue. Spotlights help you play with light and darkness to create a mystical look around the statue.
Doors and Walls of the House:
For the door of your home, you can use a wall-mounted light that shows the way. In case you want to highlight the woodwork on your wall, you can use floodlights that create a wall-washing effect.
For Pathways: Pathway lights are easily available. You can use them to highlight your pathway in order to ensure security for your family and guests.
Is There an Energy-Efficient Way of Landscape Lighting?
Landscape lighting can cost you a lot of money because of the amount of electricity that is used. However, you can save money by using low-voltage landscape lighting. To do this, you will need low-voltage LED landscape lighting, a transformer that powers your lights efficiently, and cables to connect the lights to your transformer. You can try using a 150W transformer. However, do calculate your power consumption with some buffer factored in to figure out the power of the transformer you would require.
